Description
Canadian ID Cards
If you’re looking to buy a Canadian ID card, the Motor Registration Division is the official agency responsible for issuing these essential identification documents. A Canadian ID card is widely accepted for all legal identification purposes within the province, such as purchasing liquor, cigarettes, and more. Contact Us.
Driver’s licenses and photo identification cards are now centrally printed and mailed to clients using a secure central issuance system, rather than being printed on demand at Motor Registration Division offices. If you’re wondering where to buy a Canadian ID card, this official process ensures that your ID card comes with enhanced security features.
Eligibility Requirements:
To qualify for a photo identification card, you must be a resident of Newfoundland & Labrador.
For New Residents from Outside Canada: If you are relocating to Newfoundland & Labrador and need to buy a Canadian ID card, you must provide proof of your legal presence in Canada. This involves submitting one primary document proving legal presence and one secondary document, or two primary documents (one of which must confirm legal presence).
For Canadian Residents: Canadian residents looking to buy a Canadian ID card online or in person must provide two pieces of identification—one must be an original primary document, and the other can be an original secondary document.

Steps to Obtain Photo ID While Out of Province:
- Verify with the airline that they will accept the following steps.
- Have a set of passport photos taken at any commercial location.
- Present the photos to a justice of the peace, notary public, commissioner of oaths, or any authorized individual for certification. You will need to present appropriate documents such as your birth certificate, social insurance card, MCP identification, etc., for this process.
